Joint Recall with Hitachi Koki, Health Canada, and the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPSC).

Full Product Description

This recall involves pneumatic coil nailers by Hitachi Koki. The nailers are hand-held tools used to project nails into drywall, wood, or other materials.

The recalled coil nailers have model number NV83A2, which can be found on the body of the product.

Only products with a date of manufacture between October 2002 and September 2005 are included in this recall. The manufacturing date is identified by the first 2 digits of the serial number. The first digit represents the month (1 for January, 2 for February, 3 for March, 4 for April, 5 for May, 6 for June, 7 for July, 8 for August, 9 for September, O for October, N for November and D for December). The second digit represents the year, and should be either a 2, 3, 4, or 5.

Hazard Identified

The coil nailer can eject nails sideways under certain conditions, posing a risk of injury to users and bystanders.

In Canada, Hitachi Koki has received 3 reports of personal injuries. The injuries were all in the eye region, including 1 report of partial blindness.

In the United States, the firm has received 37 reports of nails being ejected sideways, including 15 reports of personal injuries. The injuries were primarily in the eye region, including 5 reports of partial blindness.

Health Canada has not received any reports of injuries or incidents to Canadians, related to the use of these coil nailers.

Corrective Action

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled tool and contact Hitachi Koki Canada to arrange for a free repair.

Approximately 15 340 of the recalled products were sold across Canada, and approximately 50 000 were sold in the United States.

The recalled products were sold from approximately November 2002 to March 2006.
