The intake tubing on the recalled AvaLung packs may crack in cold temperatures and may cause the product to fail. Black Diamond states that the air intake system on these packs extracts air from the snow, allowing the victim of an avalanche to breathe while buried under the snow.
There has been one report of the tubing cracking, with no reported injuries.
Health Canada has not received any reports of incidents or injuries related to the use of these products.
Consumers who purchased their AvaLung pack in 2010 should immediately stop using it and check its model name, colour, and PO number. If the pack has been recalled, consumers are advised to contact Black Diamond for further instructions.
For more information, consumers may contact Black Diamond at 1-801-278-5533 or e-mail avalung@bdel.com. Alternatively, consumers can visit the
Black Diamond AvaLung recall website.
Consumers may view the release by the US CPSC on the Commission's
website.
Approximately 180 of the recalled AvaLung products were sold in Canada. In the United States, approximately 3500 of the recalled products have been sold.
The recalled products were sold from January to December 2010 in Canada, the United States, Europe and select countries throughout the rest of the world.
